Friends with beers at the OTH bar in front of the brewhouse

Home / About OTH

Locally owned. Veteran built.

Three Citadel graduates built a house in Charleston's brewery district that feels like family and still takes the work seriously. Kids, dogs, veterans, classmates, and anyone who wants a pint in a clean house.

the name

Why Over The Horizon,
and why 181.

Over the horizon is a military term, and it points at two things. When you transition out of the military you are considered over, or beyond, the horizon. It also describes operations beyond the line of sight: a place that is hard to recognise until you get up close, a destination you seek and rarely ever make.

181 is 180 degrees plus one degree over the horizon. It is meant to be a little silly. It is also homage. The mark is a straight line with a circle, the sun on the horizon, rising or dropping, and that circle is the degree symbol too. When a guest points at 181, that is this house.

who built it

Veteran-owned, established in the brewery district in downtown Charleston. The room is family on purpose.

what the walls are

A taproom and a living
museum at the same time.

Challenge Accepted, Challenge Returned lives in this brewery, and it is not decoration. Guests can read the stories, see the memorabilia and leave a challenge coin. Those stories matter to the person who lived them and to everyone else in the room.

Nobody has to give a speech. You do have to know why the walls look the way they look.
